(AP) ? Kentucky coach John Calipari began a list when he was asked whether he and Louisville coach Rick Pitino are too much alike to get along.

"Similarities? We've both taken three teams to the Final Four, we both got fired in the NBA and we're Italians with big noses," Calipari said Friday. "I respect what he's done, respect the program, respect the city and the school."

No. 3 Kentucky (12-1) and No. 4 Louisville (12-1) renew their rivalry in the most anticipated yearly game in the Commonwealth on Saturday at Rupp Arena, where even the smallest details are scrutinized.

So when a video came out this month showing Calipari and Pitino chatting at a high school game in Mount Washington, Ky., there was an abundance of speculation about just what the two coaches discussed.

"We don't send Christmas cards, but we're cordial to each other," Calipari said. "I went up to him, talked to him, told him he's doing a fabulous job with his team, the way they're playing, blah, blah, blah. And he said, 'Your team's really good and dah, dah, dah.' OK?

"He said 'I hope we beat you' and I said 'I hope we beat you' and I went and got a Diet Coke. That was about it. I don't know what to tell you."

The rivalry is as much about the two rabid fan bases as it is the players.

Between the two schools, 13 players have never participated in a Kentucky-Louisville game. This time, the schools have the highest combined ranking in series history. But Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis said he's recognized the passion simply by the amount of tweets he's received from fans about beating Louisville.

"We guess it's a big deal for them," Davis said.

Davis hears even more back and forth about what fans think of the respective leaders of the program.

"(They think) that they hate each other. One always goes out and parties when the other one loses," Davis said. "They look alike, but coach Pitino, I've never seen him coach so I can't say how they remind me of each other."

Only one side will have a reason to celebrate on Saturday night even though Calipari insisted he has no ill-feelings toward Pitino, saying any perceived friction comes from proximity.

"It's two different programs and two different leagues. We're not really recruiting against each other. It's just this one time and our fans are going to be happy or their fans are going to be happy, and that's it," Calipari said. "As far as our team, I'm telling you we respect them. Our players do not have animosity or hatred."

Louisville has been quiet since its 20-game home winning streak was snapped in a 71-68 loss to No. 12 Georgetown on Wednesday night. The Cardinals did not have any media availability ahead of this game and have lost the last two in the series.

"I think Kentucky is the better basketball team right now," Pitino said after the loss to the Hoyas. "Running up and down and trying to outscore Kentucky would be a futile attempt to try to get a 'W'."

Kentucky is led by Doron Lamb, averaging 15.8 points, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who is chipping in 13.5 points. Davis is averaging a double-double with 11.6 points and 10.2 rebounds.

"We know they're just as athletic, we know they're a good team, too," Kentucky senior Darius Miller said. "We can't come in thinking that we're more athletic or we're the better team. We've got to come in and play."

Louisville guard Chris Smith measured it in NBA talent.

"Every guy on their team is, I guess, a pro," Smith said. "A win Saturday would come back and erase the sting, but at the same time we're 0-1 in the Big East. We just have to keep our composure and win the game on Saturday."

It certainly won't be easy. Kentucky has the nation's longest winning streak at 43 games and hasn't lost since Calipari came to Lexington in 2009.

"It's a very hard place to play," said Louisville forward Kyle Kuric, who is averaging 13.5 points. "I'll just leave it at that."

But Miller, who grew up in Maysville, Ky., said he's expecting some wrinkles from the Cardinals, who'll need point guard Peyton Siva to get into the lane often to cause problems for the Wildcats.

"We know they are a very physical team," Miller said. "They play with a lot of intensity and we've got to match that. We've got to make them try to match our intensity and how tough we play."

Louisville freshman Chane Behanan said he's prepared for whatever happens in his first foray against the Wildcats.

"When I moved to Kentucky, I got the feel for it and understanding of it," Behanan said. "It's serious, real serious."

3 NATO troops killed in eastern Afghanistan

(AP)? KABUL, Afghanistan ? Three NATO service members have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a U.S. military convoy.

NATO's statement said that the deaths occurred Tuesday, but provided no further details about the incident or the nationalities of the troops.

The Taliban said the attack took place in Paktiya province, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Kabul.

The latest deaths bring December's toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 23, for a total of 539 deaths so far this year. The yearly tally is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The number of wounded has remained high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

Also Tuesday, a community council leader in the Musa Qala district of restive Helmand province was shot and killed by insurgents along with his 20-year-old son and two-year-old grandson, the governor's office said.

A statement from the office said the attack occurred late in the evening, as council leader Adbdul Baqi was heading home from his office. There were no further details.

The U.S.-led coalition has started transitioning parts of Helmand to the government as part of a plan to cede full control of the country's security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman Review

Introduction:

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman! Yes, we now have another Android smartphone that carries the legendary brand name, the first one being the Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman. However, while the W8 was more or less a clone of the Sony Ericsson X8, the Live with Walkman is an entirely new device. It offers some decent specs as well, namely a 1GHz processor, 3.2-inch display, and both a rear and front-facing camera, which puts is right in the mid-range category of smartphones. But is it any good? Let us take it for a spin and find out...

The package contains:
  • Wired headset
  • Wall charger
  • microUSB cable
  • 2GB microSD card
  • Warranty and a getting started guide

Design:

First of all, kudos to Sony Ericsson for designing a smartphone that does not have the boring-slab-o-plastic appearance. Yes, plastic may be what it is made out of, yet still, we quite like the Live's fresh looks and colorful accents, and we believe that the youngerly crowd will do so too. A very practical addition is the dedicated Walkman key, located on the device's top side, which acts as a shortcut to the Walkman music player app.

You can compare the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman with many other phones using our Size Visualization Tool.

Using the Sony Ericsson Live with a single hand is as easy as pie since it fits nicely in your palm and its dimensions allow for your thumb to effortlessly reach all of the display's edges. Its relatively low weight of 115 grams or 4.06 ounces is definitely nothing to complain about. However, the smartphone is quite thick with a waistline of 14.2 millimeters or 0.56 inches.

The handset's design has more than a few imperfections, some of which less tolerable than others. To start, when using it with a single hand, the buttons on its top are somewhat difficult to operate, especially when there is a pair of headphones plugged in. Speaking of buttons,? the dedicated camera key is really tricky to use. Technically, it is a 2-stage shutter button, but the lack of feedback makes it very hard figuring out whether it has been pushed half-way, all the way down, or not pressed at all. Another flaw is that its front and back sides are prone to collecting finger smudge.
Display:

The front of the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman is occupied by a bland-looking 3.2-inch display with a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels. Punching these numbers in a PPI calculator gives us the figure of 180 pixels per inch, which is not bad, but nothing impressive either. Its color reproduction leans a bit towards the warm side, while its contrast levels and viewing angles are average at best. Another problem that we notice is that its pixel response time is rather high, meaning that moving objects leave a faint blurry trail behind them. At least the display's brightness output is high enough to make using the smartphone on a sunny day comfortable.

Globe-trotting turtle returns to sea after long rehab

A world-traveling sea turtle found stranded in the Netherlands is back home in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after three long years of rest and rehabilitation.

The animal, an endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, was found frigid and near-dead off the coast of the Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from the Gulf waters these turtles call home. It was dubbed Johnny Vasco de Gama by its European rescuers.

Marine biologists suspect Johnny became caught in cold currents and was "cold-stunned," a condition that shuts down internal organs and can kill sea turtles. Staff members of the Rotterdam Zoo stabilized the ailing turtle and sent him to the Ocean?rio de Lisboa aquarium in Portugal the following summer.

After rehabilitation there, Johnny flew in a specially adapted plane back across the Atlantic to Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida. Today scientists there released the well-traveled turtle back into the sea.

"He did just fine," Mote spokesman Hayley Rutger told LiveScience.

Johnny is fitted with a satellite tag that will help researchers keep an eye on his next amazing journey. Mote has tracked more than 120 sea turtles since 2005, according to Tony Tucker, the head of the laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program.

Letter: Economy not GOP?s fault

In William Lyons? Dec. 15 letter, he laments congressional partisanship and implies Republicans are responsible ? plus they blocked the magnitude of the Obama stimulus package.

How? Democrats were in complete control of all branches of government when the stimulus was created.

President Roosevelt did engage in modest deficit spending, but realized financial integrity/security means a balanced budget.

Apparently President Obama rejects this fact and believes that overspending and borrowing more money will end a depression. Why did the Great Depression last so long ? 1929 to 1940? How long will the current depression last?

For both, the answer is ? and was ? end federal intervention. The private sector provides jobs and job creation. Excessive regulations and uncertain tax policies prevent this.

How much longer can President Bush be blamed for the current mess?
Warren G. Harding presided over the 1920-21 Depression. He did nothing but cut federal spending. Unemployment went from 11.7 percent to 6.7 percent to a low of 1.8 percent.

Do we really want to repeat the Great Depression but this time on steroids?
Partisanship is a two-way street. A close look will reveal partisan Democrats and President Obama do not want compromise.

It?s either their misguided way or the highway.

US twins give birth minutes apart in same hospital

VOORHEES, New Jersey (AP) ? Twin sisters in New Jersey have given birth to their first children just minutes apart in the same hospital.

Danielle and Nicole Fisher were in adjacent rooms, and the boys were born 13 minutes apart Tuesday night.

The women had been born within 12 minutes of each other 23 years ago.

Nicole tells The Courier-Post newspaper it just has something to do with "that twin communication." They say they didn't plan to get pregnant at the same time.

Danielle gave birth to Jonathan at 7:43 p.m. Nicole, who wasn't due for two weeks, delivered Maximus minutes later.

The twins' mother, Lisa Fisher, tells the newspaper it's unbelievable.

Kim Jong Il's Most Dangerous Legacy: A Thriving Nuclear-Export Business (Time.com)

Kim Jong Il's death leaves the Korean peninsula and the rest of East Asia in a period of great uncertainty. But one of Kim Jong Il's most dangerous legacies has security implications well beyond the region: he leaves behind a thriving nuclear weapons export business that must now be stopped.

There has been mounting evidence in recent years that North Korea has set up an illicit nuclear export business to Syria, Iran and potentially elsewhere. Syria's Al-Kibar nuclear reactor, which was bombed by Israeli warplanes in 2007, closely resembled a North Korean facility used to produce plutonium for bombs, and one western diplomat told me that several senior North Korean technicians were killed in the raid. (See photos of Syria's nuclear reactor destroyed in 2007.)

North Korea and Iran's sharing of technology for missiles that could be used to deliver nuclear warheads is so extensive that some analysts say it is only appropriate to view it as operationally a joint missile program. No one knows if North Korea is also helping Iran with nuclear weapons design, and it's possible it has other, yet-to-be-detected clients as well.

North Korea shares little similarity or ideology with Syria or Iran; its dealings are largely profit-driven. For its clients, DPRK provides a black market to purchase sensitive nuclear technology without detection by the international community. The nightmare scenario is that Pyongyang would even sell fissile material -- the key ingredient for nuclear bombs -- to terrorists if the price is right.

Most nonproliferation experts find this scenario unlikely as it would be quickest route imaginable to have your country bombed and possible invaded. However, the Syrian and Iranian cases show that DPRK has been happy to sell the technology needed to produce fissile material, and the missiles needed to deliver it.

What's not clear is how much this network relied on support or at least authorization from Kim Jong Il. But reports from North Korean defectors once involved in the tripartite proliferation network suggest it is highly sophisticated and involves many different layers of officialdom. It may work something like this: North Korean state trading companies working directly for the DPRK regime set up branch offices in mainland China. These companies contract private Chinese firms to send purchase orders to the local subsidiaries of European industrial machinery companies, who have set up shop in China specifically to cash in on China's growing domestic market. (See photos of the busy life of Kim Jong Il.)

These domestic orders, of course, are not subject to export controls, so without knowing it, western subsidiaries sell dual-use technology -- industrial tool and dye equipment, for example -- directly to private Chinese firms, who then use their established routes to transport the goods to North Korea. In terms of sales, North Korea state trading companies are also contracting private Chinese firms to move sensitive goods through Southeast Asia (including Myanmar) and on to clients in the Middle East.

The success of this network is an unintended consequence of China's North Korea strategy, which has placed a high emphasis on a stable regime succession to Kim Jong Il's son, Kim Jong Un. The strategy is understandable: regime collapse in North Korea would send a flood of refugees across the border into some of the poorest provinces in China. Beijing may also believe that economic reform and party-to-party institution building can help reform North Korea and bring it in from the cold. Maybe so, but in the meantime this policy has created more opportunities for North Korea to increase its illicit activity through the mainland.

Unfortunately, enlisting China's help in cracking down on the use of private Chinese firms by North Korean entities -- even now that Kim Jong Il is dead -- is a lost cause for the U.S and its allies. China's port security and trade monitoring resources are woefully unmatched by the volume of trade in China today. Even more importantly, corruption at local levels is still a major problem.

The Proliferation Security Initiative, launched in 2003 as a voluntary organization of nations cooperating to prevent the shipment of proliferation-sensitive technologies, has proven to be an increasingly effective tool for combating North Korean smuggling. It has led to the interdiction of several North Korean shipments of missile and WMD components, most recently the turning around by the U.S. Navy of a Belize-flagged North Korean Vessel in June suspected of transporting missile technology on its way to Myanmar (and then on possibly to the Middle East). In the short term, the PSI should be continued. What's more, we should encourage PSI states -- and China -- to offer monetary rewards that lead to the interdiction of North Korean consignments. Mercenary traders, after all, can often be bought when they cannot be stopped. (Read "China's Stake in a Stable North Korea.")

North Korea is a backward, broken country with a dysfunctional economy. But its leaders are expert survivors and remarkably apt at getting what they need; we should not assume that this will change with Kim Jong Il's pasing. With two nuclear weapons tests already complete, North Korea has clearly learned how to construct a black market, full-service nuclear weapons program. There is growing evidence that they will now help any country that can pay to do the same.

The death of Kim Jong Il should focus the West's attention on stopping the spread of North Korean technology. Cutting off the supply would buy us time to fight the other half of the battle. In countries and regions where the demand for nuclear weapons remains strong, we must do more to address the underlying issues that cause countries to seek nuclear weapons in the first place.

NFL scouts are cold, bottom line men. You need to be to do that job. And the assessment of two longtime scouts reflects just that -- both called USC quarterback Matt Barkley's decision to stay, well, not very smart.

"A foolish business decision," said one scout.

"This is Matt Leinart dumb," said another.

Well, okay then.

It should be noted that past quarterbacks who were injured after returning for their?senior season still went high in the draft. One of the more notable names was Sam Bradford who missed time his senior season at college because of an injured knee and then later missed most of the season because of shoulder surgery. Yet he still went first overall in the draft to the Rams.

Yet despite proof that a player can stay for his senior season and still go high in the NFL draft it is Leinart who remains one of the great cationary tales among scouts in professional football about the dangers of forgoing the draft when eligible. Leinart also returned for his senior season and after his career went 10th overall instead of first overall (which he would have done had he entered his junior year). That decision cost him millions of dollars.

Thus the phrase "Matt Leinart dumb."

Two scouts say Barkley is a top ten pick right now. Easy.

"There's a chance he could come back his senior season and be the first or second pick in the draft," said a scout, "but it's a total crapshoot. You never know."

Is Barkley "Matt Leinart dumb?"

We'll see.

Is this winning? How we lost by following celebs (AP)

Historians are usually able to look back and pinpoint the factors that caused the greatest of nations to fall into decline. If it ever comes time to dissect what happened to the United States, they will likely boil it down to one word: WINNING.

Yes, folks ? when a Charlie Sheen manic outburst becomes an inspirational motto for a nation, it's the beginning of the end. Sadly, historians will likely have other moments to illustrate our cultural collapse, including Kim Kardashian's blink-and-you-missed-it marriage, which generated more money than some cities' annual budgets, and the fact that some people took Donald Trump's possible presidential candidacy seriously.

No wonder the Occupy Wall Street protest avoided the 1 percent's crazy sibling ? Hollywood.

_____

KEEPING IT KLASSY: Some things are meant to last one season: bright pink flip-flops, a relationship with George Clooney, the McRib at McDonald's. But not marriage. And while celebrity marriages can flame out quickly, the implosion of Kim Kardashian's 72-day union with Kris Humphries was all the more spectacular because of the hype that preceded it: the 20.5-carat diamond engagement ring, the engagement party, the three wedding-day gowns, the two-part TV special ? even Kate Middleton would have said, "Enough already!" It was more distasteful because it was filmed for her reality show, garnering her more cash than gifts. By the end of the year, the backlash was so strong, she headed to Haiti for charity work, looking to improve her bruised image. Or, perhaps, hubby No. 3.

IF THIS IS WINNING, LOSING MUST REALLY SUCK: Celebrities have meltdowns in public all the time, yet we hadn't had a really epic breakdown since Britney Spears shaved her head bald. Maybe that's what made Charlie Sheen's collapse so transfixing. He gave us everything we expected in a train wreck ? and more: Custody battles! Jittery interviews! Goddesses! And of course, "WINNING!" Watching his daily dose of acting crazy was more entertaining ? and addictive ? than any episode of "Two and a Half Men." But we overdosed when Sheen went on his stand-up tour, which basically gave him a pass to go on rambling diatribes on foolish people's dimes. Sadly, even as pathetic as it was, it still had more live vocals than a Britney tour.

TODAY'S WORD OF THE DAY IS "EWWWWWWW": We didn't realize Justin Bieber had reached puberty, so it came as a shock when Mariah Yeater claimed he was the baby daddy to her months-old son following an alleged romp after one of his concerts ? when she was 19, and he was just 16. A paternity suit was filed, DNA tests were bandied about, all while Maury Povich salivated from the sidelines. But, alas, we never got a chance to see Bieber do the customary pimp-walk strut to the phrase "You are NOT the father!" Yeater withdrew her paternity claim as her story started to collapse and Bieber took a paternity test. We would have preferred that Biebs prove his manhood with a passable mustache.

THE DONALD WOULD RATHER BE EMPEROR: Donald Trump got the media buzzing when he announced his intention to run for president ? maybe. To burnish his credentials as a conservative Republican, he seized on the so-called "birther" bandwagon by stoking doubt about President Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship. In the end, Obama released his Hawaiian "long form" birth certificate proving he is indeed a "natural-born citizen," as the Constitution requires. And, unfortunately, so is Trump.

WHY CELEBS SHOULD FLY IN PRIVATE JETS: because they cannot behave themselves on commercial flights. Alec Baldwin was kicked off a flight for refusing to stop playing a cellphone game while the plane was parked at the gate. Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was denied a seat because of his sagging pants, and Gerard Depardieu urinated on a plane ahead of takeoff, apparently unable and/or unwilling to hold his bladder until he got the OK to move about the cabin. Next time you see a celebrity on your plane, instead of asking for an autograph, ask for a seat far, far away.

PROOF THERE ARE NO SURPRISES IN LIFE: Kat Von D broke up with Jesse James, saying she was shocked ? yes shocked! ? that James, who was unfaithful to Sandra Bullock during her Oscar campaign, had also allegedly cheated on her ? with 19 women.

TONE DEAF: At just 13, Rebecca Black became a sensation ? and laughingstock ? of the Internet, thanks to her hard-on-the-ears tune, "Friday," which her parents paid producers to make, along with the now infamous video on YouTube. Seemingly oblivious to the wonders of Auto-Tune, Black's nasally warbling became embedded in the brain like a bad virus. And yet she sounded better than any LMFAO tune.

LOOK, IT'S CHRIS BROWN ? DUCK!: Chris Brown's star, seemingly forever tarnished after beating then-girlfriend Rihanna, was on the rise when he decided to go on "Good Morning America" to perform and talk to host Robin Roberts. But Roberts' decision to ask about the Rihanna incident got under Brown's skin. After the interview, he trashed his dressing room, even breaking a window. Yet people continued to buy copies of his comeback album. Apparently, fear is the best motivator.

WAS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SEQUEL TO THE FILM "TWINS"? When Maria Shriver announced that she was divorcing Arnold Schwarzenegger after 25 of marriage and a stint in the California governor's mansion, we thought it was because she'd finally seen those tiny Speedo pictures. But then we learned that not only did he cheat on her with the family housekeeper, but he and the housekeeper had a son together around the time Maria gave birth to their child, also a boy. Guess it wasn't the wisest decision to let Schwarzenegger be in charge of giving out the employee bonuses.

Ratings threats, North Korea pressure stocks (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? European stocks and the euro were under pressure on Monday in the wake of a fresh rating agency warning on the euro zone debt crisis, while news of the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il sparked fears of regional instability in Asia.

MSCI's world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) was down around 0.5 percent, while the key FTSE Eurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) opened 0.6 percent lower with other major regional indexes also down. In Asia, South Korea's benchmark index hit a three-week closing low, down 3.4 percent, having fallen as much as 5 percent earlier. (.KS11)

The euro was about 0.1 percent lower at $1.3022, not far from an 11-month low of $1.2944 hit last week, on fears that ratings downgrades for several European countries could derail progress towards resolving the euro zone's debt crisis.

In Asia investors sought the dollar as a safe haven when news of the North Korean leader's death broke, but by 0815 GMT the U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, had given up its gains and was flat around 80.25.

"It is hard to predict how things in North Korea will develop from here this time. The news comes at a time when financial markets had already been in fragile shape," said Bae Sung-young, a market analyst at Hyundai Securities.

That fragility was highlighted on Friday when Fitch Ratings warned it may downgrade France and six other euro zone countries, saying a comprehensive solution to the region's debt crisis was "technically and politically beyond reach."

German government bonds were steady early on Monday, supported by some safe-haven buying linked to the death of the North Korean leader and the ratings agency warnings.

While credit downgrades are anticipated, trade is expected to thin out ahead of the Christmas holidays.

Markets are expected to monitor the outcome of a euro zone finance ministers' teleconference from 1430 GMT on Monday.

Commodities, already under pressure due to Europe's sovereign debt crisis, also fell on the North Korean news, with Brent crude off 0.6 percent at about $102.75 a barrel. Gold, usually regarded as a safe-haven asset in times of uncertainty, recovered from losses seen in Asia was steady at $1,591.59 an ounce.

Michelle Obama donates gifts to Toys for Tots (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Michelle Obama is urging people to give to charities for the holiday season as she brought more than 800 gifts Friday from White House staff to donate to the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign.

The first lady also got a surprise invitation from a soldier to be his date at next year's Marine Corps Ball.

Lance Cpl. Aaron Leeks, 20, of Frederick, Md., said he asked Obama to accompany him because he's a fan and admires her work to support the military.

When Obama was sorting toys at the charity event and came close to Leeks, he leaned over a toy bin and got her attention to pop the question. The first lady smiled and called over a staff member as she chatted with Leeks.

"She said she'd love to go," Leeks said. "Actually, she said I'd need to speak to her husband, too, but she said she'd love to."

Leeks said he plans to follow up on his invitation. In January, he will be deployed for the first time to Afghanistan but plans to attend the ball when he's home next year.

Later at the White House, Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked whether the president would consider such an offer. Carney said that may be the first the president was hearing about this.

"The first lady's commitment to military families is very strong, indeed," he said. "So I'm sure she was flattered by the invitation."

Obama has supported the Toys for Tots campaign for each of the last three years and urges White House staff to buy gifts to donate. She said they had a 27 percent increase in donations this year.

"It's not too late to donate," she said. "It's still important to nudge our neighbors to give, give, give. We need people to bring in toys like never before."

Millions of families rely on such gifts to make the holidays special for their children, she said.

She hauled in a big red bag of toys, slung over her shoulder to the Washington military base Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. She wished volunteers a "Merry Christmas" and helped sort toys into bins marked for boy and girls by age group. Obama noted more toys are needed for older children, including books and games.

For people who are doing well this year, "it's up to us to dig deep and to make sure we take care of our neighbors out there who may be struggling," she said.

Organizers said the toys will be distributed to needy children in the Washington area.

Obama said her daughter Malia was impressed to learn that Toys for Tots was started by the Marines.

"You all have given so much to our country, as Malia has recognized, and you just keep giving more," Obama said.

Retired Marine Gen. Pete Osman, president and CEO of Quantico, Va.-based Toys for Tots, said Obama is their "No. 1 volunteer," and he called her commitment to military families "incredible."

"It sends a big signal to the military," he said of Obama's support. "When you've got someone like the first lady behind you, how can you go wrong?"

The charity's challenge this year, though, is rising demand as people are still suffering because of the economy, he said. The group has increased the number of toy drives nationwide this year to 730.

The event was Michelle Obama's last holiday stop in Washington. Later Friday, she and daughters Malia and Sasha were scheduled to depart for their annual holiday trip to see family in Hawaii. She said she didn't know when the president would be able to join them. Congress is still grappling with budget issues to close out the year.

Jobs report shows strong start to 2012 in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- A new report by the global staffing company Manpower shows a strengthening job market in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta region in the first quarter of 2012.

"It's the?ninth straight quarter of positive news here in Atlanta," said Beth Herman, Manpower's Metro Regional Director.?"We're the 4th strongest in the U.S."

The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey shows 18 percent of employers plan to increase current staff levels next quarter and six percent?expect to reduce staff.?That translates into a net employment outlook of 12 percent, the second highest in three years.

"IT, engineering, and finance continue to be areas that run 3-1/2 to 5 percent unemployment," Herman said.?"At the same time, skilled trades, call centers, administrative assistants here in Atlanta are absolutely in demand."

The vast majority of companies, 71 percent,?plan to maintain their current staffing levels.

"We used to say cautious optimism," Herman said. "I think that's becoming more and more plain optimism."

Herman said job-seekers have to make sure they have a clean resume, practice your interviewing skills and stay positive.

Even through the holidays, she said?the should?keep calling and writing and looking.

According to the state department of labor, the unemployment rate for metro Atlanta dipped to 9.9 percent in October, down from 10.2 percent in September.

That's lower than the state unemployment rate but higher than the national rate of 8.6 percent.

New state unemployment numbers for November are expected to be released on Thursday.

Supreme Court to judge on patents for treating disease

THE long arm of the law may soon reach your doctor's office. In a case before the US Supreme Court, a drug company is fighting for a patent that could hold medical knowledge hostage.

Prometheus Laboratories in San Diego, California, holds a patent on guidelines for treating gastrointestinal diseases. It is battling the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota over claims that the clinic's methods of treating these diseases conflict with its patent, which covers dosage adjustments that tell doctors how much medicine should be prescribed based on metabolites in the body.

Although discoveries can be patented in the US, this claim over natural body processes goes too far, according to a statement by a group of organisations including the American Medical Association in support of the Mayo Clinic. "Long before the patentee drafted his claims, physicians treating autoimmune disorders... recognized the relationship between metabolite levels and therapeutic efficacy of the drugs," they write.

They say that patenting the "utterly conventional steps" will result in poorer patient care. "Higher priced medical care is an inevitable result," they add.

Does the ?God particle? need to be renamed? (The Newsroom)

Hitchens (AP)

Christopher Hitchens, the author, writer and Vanity Fair contributing editor, has died, the magazine announced late Thursday. He was 62.

Hitchens, who had been battling esophageal cancer since early 2010, died at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, surrounded by friends, Vanity Fair said.

"There will never be another like Christopher," Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter said in a statement. "A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar. Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

The brash, combative and provocative Hitchens was an "incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant," Vanity Fair's Juli Weiner wrote in one of what will assuredly be many memoriams in the next several hours.

His last book, "Hitch-22," was published shortly before his diagnosis, forcing him to cancel a book tour.

"I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus," Hitchens wrote then. "This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice."

Yet, he continued to write about his fight with cancer--among other weighty topics--in the months that followed.

"Cancer victimhood contains a permanent temptation to be self-centered and even solipsistic," he wrote in Vanity Fair last year.

In June 2011, he observed: "My chief consolation in this year of living dyingly has been the presence of friends."

We'll post selections of remembrances from some of those friends, and obituaries, below. Check back here for updates.
