The unemployment rate has hovered between 9 and 10% for much of the past couple years, a scary number for the 68% of homeowners who say they wouldn?t be able to keep up with mortgage payments after nine months if they lost their job,

Prosecutor targets forensic experts in Knox trial (Reuters)

PERUGIA, Italy (Reuters) ? An Italian prosecutor attacked on Saturday the "embarrassing" performance of forensic experts who shed doubt on evidence used to convict American student Amanda Knox for the murder of her British housemate.

On the second day of closing arguments in Knox's appeals trial in the university town of Perugia, prosecutor Manuela Comodi questioned the methods used by the experts whose work was not up to standards, she said.

"Would you entrust the marriage of your only daughter to a cook who knew all the recipes by heart but has never cooked?" Comodi asked the panel of lay and professional judges.

The experts' report boosted Knox's case for being absolved of murdering Meredith Kercher with her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito during a frenzied sex game in 2007. The Seattle native has already spent nearly four years in prison.

Their report concluded traces of Sollecito's DNA found on Kercher's bra clasp could have been due to contamination. But if contamination had occurred, DNA belonging to many others would also have been found on the clasp, Comodi argued.

Pulling out a white bra, Comodi said Sollecito's DNA ended up on the clasp when he pulled one end of Kercher's bra strap and cut off the bra with his other hand.

Kercher's murder and Knox's trial has transfixed Italy, Britain and the United States, helped in large part by the American's fresh-faced good looks and the gruesome nature of the murder.

A verdict in the appeals trial is expected after concluding arguments from both prosecution and defense at the end of next week, nearly four years after the murder stunned Italy and shook Perugia's image as an idyllic student town in the Umbrian hills.

Knox was sentenced in 2009 to 26 years in prison and Sollecito to 25 years for the murder. Rudy Guede, an Ivorian drifter with a criminal record, is also serving time for taking part in Kercher's murder.

All three say they are innocent.

AN?innovative way of encouraging young people in Devon to think twice about using sunbeds or burning in the sun has been shortlisted for a national award.

Exeter College beauty students teamed up with NHS Devon to run a public health campaign to show fellow students and clients the risks of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

1. Thirty-four beauty students at Exeter College were trained in the use of the UV scanner.

The 'Love Your Skin' campaign has been shortlisted for the 2011 Health Service Journal Awards. As part of the campaign students were given training to use an ultraviolet facial scanner.

This reveals the early signs of skin damage and shows people the damage already done to their skin.

The students also gave advice to fellow students and tutors on finding out their skin type and how they can protect their skin in the sun to avoid burning. This included fake tanning demonstrations to show a safer alternative to sunbathing or sunbeds.

Devon has some of the highest rates of malignant melanoma in the country, due in part to the high number of hours of sunshine in the county.

Ex-Goldman employee charged with insider trading (Reuters)

The commission said that through his work at Goldman, New York resident Spencer Mindlin, 33, was able to get nonpublic information about Goldman's plans to buy and sell securities underlying the SPDR S&P Retail Exchange-Traded Fund (XRT), which replicate the performance of the Standard & Poor's Retail Select Industry Index (.SPSIRE).

The SEC said he then tipped off his father, 68, a certified public accountant who resides in Massapequa, New York and Delray Beach, Florida. Together, the SEC alleges, the father and son traded illegally in four different securities that underlie the ETF.

The insider trading allegedly occurred in December 2007 and March 2008. At the time, the SEC said that Goldman was the largest institutional holder of the XRT so that its customers could short it. Goldman also shorted the various securities underlying the ETF in order to hedge its long position.

The agency claims Spencer Mindlin knew all about Goldman's hedging strategy, and that he and his father began buying and selling securities underlying the ETF. Their trades were allegedly made in a brokerage account under a family member's name, and he did not disclose them to his employer.

Since the dawn of time, generations of scholars and philosophers have posited that the world exists in two realms, the physical and the spiritual. All religions though in dispute still agree on one thing; the existence of a supreme being, a higher power, a being that controls the destiny of man. In pre-colonial Nigeria, our ancestors worshipped various gods and then the white supremacists came and brought us Christianity; Islam soon followed. But despite the new acceptance of God and Allah, most Nigerians still held on to the gods of their ancestors. In Edo State for instance, you will find that in some areas most households go to church diligently but still have mud shrines at the back of their houses, they somehow found a way to balance both doctrines.The need for love and the belief in the potency of black magic informed the invention and use of love potions, the fact that we are now in the 21st century where technology has taken over every aspect of life has done nothing to reduce the amount of tales we hear about people resorting to fetish means to acquire a lover, keep a lover or gain more wealth.

Enough of the history lesson.

I was astounded and amused; I couldn?t wait to share my newfound knowledge. In fact, the saying had even metamorphosed into a statement used to remind men to be wary of desperate women.

I wonder, is there any hope for finding real love if some of us women are up against the breed of women who use ?jazz? to get a man? Some justify this by saying that it is allowed as long as no one is getting harmed, I beg to differ; freewill is essential in love, relationships and marriage, even the love of God is not forced, you are allowed to choose. This brings me to these questions:

If you are in a good relationship and you find out your partner slipped something into your food or used ?juju? to make you fall in love with them would you remain in that relationship?

If you were desperately in love with someone who doesn?t love you back, is it justifiable to use ?other means? to get the person to be with you?

While you ponder on my questions, I will leave you with this admonition: ?no go chop pepper soup for girl house o?.

Better safe than sorry.
