Savannah Hardin, Allegedly Run To Death By Relatives, Had Tumultuous Home Life
ATTALLA, Ala. -- Savannah Hardin's life was in turmoil long before police say the 9-year-old was run to death by her grandmother and stepmother for allegedly lying about some candy she ate.
Divorce and custody documents filed in family court over a period of several years reflect a history of fractured family relationships, with Savannah's divorced parents fighting over her welfare; claims of mental instability and abuse between her father and his second wife; medical problems that required frequent doctor visits; and counseling for the girl who still somehow managed to remain among the top students in her third-grade class.
Authorities say Savannah's life ended in exhaustion earlier this month when she was forced by her paternal grandmother, Joyce Hardin Gerrard, to run for three hours, while her stepmother, Jessica Mae Hardin, did nothing to stop it.
The grandmother prodded her along cruelly, and the stepmother didn't intervene until Savannah collapsed in an unconscious heap, investigators say.
Now, Hardin Garrard is in jail and Savannah's stepmother is being held in police custody at a hospital after giving birth to another child. Both have been charged with murder.
Jessica Mae Hardin's attorneys, Morgan Cunningham and Vince Pentecost, said in a statement Friday that Hardin was "incredibly devastated over Savannah's death" and they would prove her innocence.
"Unfortunately, whenever a child passes away, our society wants to place blame, our media wants to sensationalize and our elected officials want to make grandiose statements that are not based in fact," they said.
A defense lawyer representing the grandmother said she will be cleared of any crime.
"Even then, Joyce Garrard and her family will continue to grieve over the loss of their beloved Savannah," Dani Bone said.
Neighbors and classmates created a small memorial for Savannah, depositing stuffed animals and flowers and attaching balloons to a wooden fence surrounding the trailer where she lived with her family off a dirt road. Included in the informal memorial was a white wooden cross hung with a blue ribbon and to which a poem had been attached. A neighbor of Savannah's family, Gail Denny, held back tears as she placed a candle and a stuffed animal at the site Wednesday. She noted that on Valentine's Day, her grandson had asked Savannah to be his girlfriend, and she said yes.
"I just can't believe it," she said of Savannah's death.
A few miles away at Carlisle Elementary School, students placed written letters and hand-drawn pictures on Savannah's desk, which was brought into a main hallway.
"Savannah was an excellent student, earning A's and B's in her school work," said a statement released by school Principal Linda Johnson. "Her favorite subject was math; she enjoyed reading books to earn points in the Accelerated Reader program ? and was very proud of always meeting her reading goals. ... Savannah was a happy child at school. She always wore a smile, and often brightened the day of teachers and administrators with her kind comments."
Many who knew Savannah described her as normal and happy. She played and laughed with other kids at the bus stop, and sometimes rode a four-wheeler with her dad when he visited, they said. She loved horses and her favorite colors were lime green, hot pink and ocean blue, Johnson said in her statement.
Court documents filed by Savannah's father, Robert Hardin, last May show she attended counseling sessions every other week but seemed well adjusted.
But the records also tell a different story, that of a brief life rocked by tumult.
Robert and Savannah's biological mother, Heather Hardin, divorced in July 2006 when she was 3, the records show. The former couple shared custody of the girl, but the mother was her primary caregiver.
Each one of the parents later moved separately to Florida, according to a sworn statement by Robert Hardin. He claimed that Heather Hardin was unfit to care for Savannah.
The Florida Department of Children and Families investigated allegations that Savannah was being mistreated or was living in hazardous conditions at least four times between 2007 and 2009 while living with Heather Hardin in Plant City, Fla., according to documents obtained by The Ledger in Lakeland, Fla., through an open records request. But state officials were unable to find evidence to support the allegations.
Robert Hardin said Savannah began living with him in October 2009. He said they moved northeast of Birmingham in January 2010. Hardin later married Jessica Mae, with whom he had a son, now 3.
Hardin works for the U.S. State Department and lived outside the country, so Jessica Mae and Joyce Hardin Garrard cared for both Savannah and the boy, said a spokeswoman for the Etowah County Sheriff's office, Natalie Barton. Hardin and Jessica split in July 2010, court documents show, with him claiming she had bipolar disorder and alcoholic tendencies. She, in turn, accused him of mental and physical abuse, including pushing her against a wall and throwing her onto a sofa. She also accused him of transferring ownership of the mobile home to Hardin Gerrard to prevent Jessica from getting it in the divorce. Despite claiming they could no longer live together, the couple reconciled by late 2010.
Court documents also show Savannah had an unspecified medical condition that required continuous medication and treatment, including monthly visits with her regular doctor and trips every few months to see a urologist in Birmingham, about 60 miles away.
Authorities say the grandmother became angry when Savannah allegedly ate chocolate, because it contains caffeine, and the girl was not supposed to ingest caffeine given her condition.
Sometime during the afternoon of Feb. 17, Joyce Hardin Gerrard allegedly forced Savannah to begin running in the yard outside their trailer. Barton said the grandmother was running the little girl "like a drill sergeant," pushing her to keep running by saying things like "Move it, move it, move it! Go, go, go!"
Barton said there is some evidence that the girl also was picking up sticks and other items in the yard and placing them in a burn pile. A large pile of unburned sticks and other items could be seen Friday behind the family's mobile home.
The stepmother, Jessica Mae Hardin, didn't intervene and call 911 until after the girl collapsed about three hours into her ordeal, Barton said. Savannah was taken to an area hospital and then later transferred to a hospital in Birmingham, where she was put on life support. Her father made the decision to disconnect her, and she died Monday.
While court documents show the girl's biological mother, Heather Hardin, hadn't been able to see her in months, an ex-husband said the woman rushed to Alabama from Florida in time to see Savannah in the hospital before she died. Authorities said an autopsy showed the child was severely dehydrated and had an extremely low level of sodium, which is necessary for the body to prevent seizures and dehydration.
With both Joyce Garrard and Jessica Hardin in police custody, state welfare officials said a relative is now caring for Savannah's younger half-brother. The same person will care for Jessica Mae Hardin's newborn, they said.
Friends and strangers alike have posted scores of messages on a remembrance site set up on Facebook, with many of them saying they wished something could have been done to save Savannah's life.

The other day, I was playing around with stumbleupon and came across this photo, which -- well, it speaks for itself. Wow.
Gives you perspective, doesn't it? Actually, I'm a little surprised that the dot shows up on this image at all. Some people describe this as humbling, but for me, I see it as just the beginning. I'm very grateful to be a member of the very few generations of humanity that have ever lived who are (a) capable of creating radio broadcasts and (b) realizing how much more of the universe there is beyond what we've experienced.I tweeted a link to it, and while I expected some retweets, I was surprised to see its spread -- I think it's probably the single most retweeted tweet I have ever written. There's probably several reasons for that. Links to photos are more likely to be retweeted than others. Very short but still substantial tweets are more likely to be retweeted, because it gives the repeater scope for their own commentary. And this is the sort of thing that can make just about anybody who is capable of operating a cell phone go "hmm," so it has wide appeal.
The one thing I feel bad about is that stumbleupon sent me directly to the photo on somebody else's website, and I didn't bother looking up its origin before I tweeted the link. So now I have, and I can tell you that the diagram was made by Adam Grossman on the jackadamblog, using an artist's concept of the Milky Way by Nick Risinger that he took from Wikipedia. They have a neato-looking iOS app, Dark Sky, that provides very short-term weather predictions. My apologies, Adam, for sending so much traffic directly to the photo rather than to your blog! Hopefully this post will correct that error.
A special note to the pedants: yes, I do realize that the signal from our radio and TV broadcasts is so attenuated by that 100-light-year boundary as to be undetectable except by some kind of magical alien technology. That's not the point. Don't be so literal!
One last thing: my apologies for no post yesterday and the likelihood of very few posts next week. I have a lot of other projects going right now that do not automatically produce blog posts, and not enough time.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? In the final months before she resigned as Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin displayed growing frustration over deteriorating relationships with state lawmakers and outrage over ethics complaints that she felt frivolously targeted her and prompted her to write: "I can't take it anymore."
The details are included in more than 17,000 records released Thursday by state officials ? nearly 3 1/2 years after citizens and news organizations, including The Associated Press, first requested Palin's emails. The emails, most from Palin's final 10 months in office, illustrate what Palin has said all along: The intense scrutiny of her family and work was a financial and emotional drain that forced her to step down as governor.
In a March 19, 2009, email to spokeswoman Sharon Leighow and aide Kris Perry, she complained that more than 150 freedom of information requests had cost the state more than $1 million, adding: "and who knows what all the bogus ethics charges have cost the state."
She expressed anger at having to pay for her own defense, with a bill that at that point totaled more than $500,000, saying her husband had to go back to work on the North Slope because of it.
"We've all had to pay for our OWN legal defense in this political bloodsport ? it's horrendous ? why do you think Todd is on the slope today?" Palin wrote. "I am paying to defend in my capacity as GOVERNOR ? actions taken in my official position. This is unheard of anywhere else."
She added that she had been the target of "many frivolous suits and charges since the DAY I became VP candidate. I can't afford this job."
Palin expressed frustration with the media in an April 11, 2009, email: "If there were any other way I could speak to Alaskans without going through some of these reporters, I sure would." Palin currently works as a commentator for Fox News.
By the spring of 2009, the emails show, Palin was regularly butting heads with lawmakers of both parties over her absences from the Capitol. She asked her aides to tally how many days she was out of Alaska in 2008. The staff came up with 94 days, but 10 less if you count travel days when she was in the state part of the day, The absences included all of October and most of September while she was on the campaign trail as the GOP vice presidential candidate.
"It's unacceptable, and there must be push back on their attempts to lame duck this administration," Palin wrote to her top aides on April 9.
Citizens and news organizations, including the AP, first requested Palin's emails in September 2008, as part of her vetting as the Republican vice presidential nominee. The state released a batch of the emails last June, a lag of nearly three years that was attributed to the sheer volume of the records and the flood of requests stemming from Palin's tenure.
The 24,199 pages of emails that were released last year ended in September 2008, as she was campaigning with GOP presidential nominee John McCain. Thursday's release includes 17,736 records, or 34,820 pages, generally spanning from October 2008 until Palin's resignation as Alaska governor, in July 2009.
Tim Crawford, treasurer of Sarah Palin's political action committee, on Thursday encouraged everyone to read the emails. "They show a governor hard at work for her state," he said.
Several media organizations, including msnbc.com, said they were not informed of Thursday's release.
Leighow, now a spokeswoman for the current governor, Sean Parnell, said records in the governor's office indicated that msnbc.com did not request the second group of emails but she said a CD containing the documents was being sent to their offices because it contained emails inadvertently omitted from the first release.
Palin's frustration over a series of ethics complaints filed against her, one of the issues she cited when stepping down, emerges in an April 2009 email in which she commiserated over a story indicating another ethics complaint was to be filed: "Unflippinbelievable... I'm sending this because you can relate to the bullcrap continuation of the hell these people put the family through," she wrote to aides Ivy Frye and Frank Bailey.
Later that day, in an email to her husband and two top aides, on the issue, she said: "I can't take it anymore."
Earlier, after a Feb. 18, 2009, Washington Post story titled, "Back Home in Alaska, Palin finds cold comfort," was pointed out to her, she emailed her husband. "Would you pray for our strength. And for God to totally turn things around... Enough is enough. May we see victories and feel His hand of mercy and grace." He replies, "I did."
In a Sept. 26, 2007, email to Perry and her husband Todd, titled "Marital Problems," Palin writes: "So speaking of... If we, er, when we get a divorce, does that quell "conflict of interest" accusations about BP?" Her husband was a former BP employee on the North Slope.

<P>Earlier this week, British music mag <a href="http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=1&title=the_most_pretentious _albums_ever&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1" target="_blank"><i>NME</i></a> set out to determine the "10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever." The list includes (genuinely pretty terrible) conceptual fare like Kiss' <i>Music From "The Elder,"</i> Lou Reed's <i>Metal Machine Music</i> and, uh, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>'s <i>Born This Way,</i> which somehow bested all competitors to nab the #1 spot. How? Well, as <i>NME</i> writer Priya Elan wrote, "On <i>Born This Way,</i> [Gaga] seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy 'anthems' that couldn't mask the fact that the fun had left the building." Elan singled out the thumping "Scheiße" as <I>BTW</i>'s most pretentious moment, adding, "Did electroclash die for this?" Snap. As you'd probably expect, those jabs had Gaga's Little Monsters on the offensive, and they launched an all-out attack on Elan in the comments section of <i>NME</i>'s website. But Gaga herself remained above the fray — for a while, anyway. On Thursday night, she took to her <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/172828595134267392" target="_blank">Twitter account</a> to hit back at <i>NME,</i> a publication that's certainly been <a href="http://i28.tinypic.com/2vwzpfp.jpg" target="_blank">no stranger to charges of pretentiousness</a> over the years. "Oh the irony of winning 'Most Pretentious Album Ever' from none other than NME. *Eye roll,*" Gaga wrote. "I might laugh forever [and] then return to narcissism." Double snap. Daniel von Bargen, a character actor who played Mr. Kruger on "Seinfeld," is in critical condition after shooting himself in the head, according to a report on TMZ.
The website has posted audio of a 911 call von Bargen made from his Ohio home Monday morning. During the call, he tells a dispatcher: "I was supposed to go to the hospital and I didn't want to. They were supposed to amputate at least a few toes."
Von Bargen, 61,?says in the call that he shot himself in the temple with a .38 Colt and that he can't open his eyes. He tells the operator that he has already had one leg amputated and was "tired," referring to the procedure slated for his other leg.
The call ends with police entering von Bargen's apartment and they can be heard telling him to not move his hands and asking whether he has any other guns around.

Dalla-Pozza was one of 18 recipients of Alumni Association awards.

Born in Anson County and now residing in Cary, Dalla-Pozza has been active in North Carolina Cooperative Extension for more than 70 years. After graduating from Woman?s College in Greensboro (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) in 1943, she became the youngest Cooperative Extension agent in the state.
In an Extension career that spanned nearly five decades, Dalla-Pozza served as assistant state home economics leader and provided leadership to the North Carolina Extension Homemakers? Organization (now North Carolina Extension and Community Association). She started the organization?s internship program and led efforts to preserve and send food to soldiers overseas. Dalla-Pozza also worked with Extension Homemakers to shape state and local policy to support families across North Carolina.
Dalla-Pozza has received a number of accolades throughout her career, including the National Association of Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Distinguished Service Award. She also was named to the North Carolina Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation Hall of Fame (inaugural class) and the North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame.
She was instrumental in organizing both the North Carolina Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation and the North Carolina Extension and Community Association Foundation. These two groups have raised more than $2.3 million in endowments and enhancement funds and have secured more than $2 million in grants in five years.
Dalla-Pozza also created the Ada B. Dalla Pozza Family and Consumer Sciences Association Endowment, which provides professional development funds for agents from across the state. She also has made additional gifts to the NC State University Club, the Carol Caldwell Scholarship Endowment, the Jane S. McKimmon Society, and to numerous endowments for 4-H, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Extension and Community Association programs.

UK's Cameron: Scotland must snub independence (AP)
LONDON ? Heading to Scotland for talks on an independence referendum, British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday that he would fight "head, heart and soul" to prevent the breakup of the United Kingdom.
Cameron was scheduled to hold his first meeting on the issue with Scotland's leader Alex Salmond, whose separatist party has long campaigned for the nation to leave its neighbors behind for the first time in more than 300 years.
Salmond is seeking to hold an independence referendum in September 2014, hoping that a separation from London would be completed with a May 2016 election for the Scottish Parliament.
However, with opinion polls showing that only about a third of Scots currently favor splitting the nation, Cameron and others opponents are pressing for the vote to be held earlier.
Scotland and England united in 1707 to form Great Britain, but Scotland gained significant autonomy after voting in 1997 to set up the semiautonomous Edinburgh-based Scottish Parliament, which has power from education, health and justice and can make minor alterations to income tax.
London retains primacy on all matters relating to Britain as a whole ? including defense, energy and foreign relations.
Cameron's government and Salmond are already at odds over the date of the referendum, what will be on the ballot paper and whether 16- and 17-year-olds should be entitled to vote.
According to excerpts released in advance, Cameron planned to use a speech in Scotland to warn that independence could damage Britain's status in Europe, within NATO and put at risk the U.K.'s permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.
"The fight is now under way for something really precious: the future of our United Kingdom. I am 100 percent clear that I will fight with everything I have to keep our United Kingdom together," Cameron planned to say, according to the excerpts.
"To me, this is not some issue of policy or strategy or calculation ? it matters head, heart and soul. Our shared home is under threat and everyone who cares about it needs to speak out," the text said.
Salmond insists that independence would bring greater prosperity, allowing Scotland to better exploit its energy resources.
"We have 25 percent of Europe's tidal power potential, 25 percent of its offshore wind potential and 10 percent of its wave power potential ? not bad for a nation with less than 1 percent of Europe's population," Salmond said Wednesday in a speech to the London School of Economics.
Cameron insisted Scotland would be safer and richer if it remained a part of the U.K., along with England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Both Wales and Northern Ireland also have administrations with some limited powers.
"We're stronger, because together we count for more in the world, with a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, real clout in NATO and Europe and unique influence with allies all over the world," Cameron planned to say.
"In an increasingly dangerous world we have the fourth-largest defense budget on the planet, superb armed forces and anti-terrorist and security capabilities that stretch across the globe and are feared by our enemies and admired by our friends," the excerpts read.
Cameron insists Scotland's 5 million people would be more prosperous as part of "the seventh-richest economy on the planet and one of the world's biggest trading powers."

'Walking Dead' star mum about show's mystery (AP)
NEW YORK ? Andrew Lincoln, who stars as Sheriff Rick Grimes in "The Walking Dead," says he loves a secret.
That's partly why Lincoln has told no one the answer to what's become the biggest mystery of the AMC zombie drama: What scientist Dr. Jenner whispered to Rick in the season one finale.
"Not even my wife knows what he whispered to me," Lincoln said in an interview Wednesday.
Lincoln said that in keeping the secret he feels he is being true to his character in the show.
"He chooses not to tell people so why would I tell," Lincoln said of the sheriff.
What was said has only been heard by a handful of people, and the mystery has become the object of intense scrutiny by fans.
Lincoln said he realized just how curious people were when a show editor revealed he had scrolled through hours of show footage and listened in on radio traffic to find the only two takes where the brief remarks were audible. The cast says the contents of the conversation will be revealed this season.
Lincoln, who says the comments are "pivotal" for Rick, hints that the message was not good news.
"This is a scientist who seemingly held all the cards to what this epidemic is about and I do think, you know, you would imagine he would have something of value to say on that matter," Lincoln said. "Well, he chose to kill himself."
The actor also said that Rick and his ragged group of survivors will likely leave the farm where they've taken refuge this season.
"Something happens and they realize very quickly that the farm is not as secure as they may think," he said.
The series continues Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern.
