SHOUTcast Album Art Available in Winamp for Android

Why would you only want to see this....

... when you could see this?

With Winamp for Android version 1.4.3 and Album Washer, you don't have to. If you are an Album Washer user, go to Settings >> SHOUTcast Album Art or by long pressing on the SHOUTcast Now Playing screen.

The Album Washer add-on was launched in June of this year as an in-app purchase ($3.99 USD) from the Winamp Add-on store. See the Album Washer tutorial for more details, but basically it's a tool that helps you clean up your personal music library. In other words, it updates incorrect or missing track information and gives you the option to download high quality album art.

In our latest release (1.4.3), Album Washer will also display high quality album art for SHOUTcast stations. The feature is turned off by default so users will have to first enable it from the Winamp Settings screen or by long holding on SHOUTcast Now Playing.

(Note to Lyrics users: the Now Playing long press function is disabled when Lyrics are turned on.)

The new SHOUTcast album artwork feature in Album Washer is based on a metadata look-up, so the accuracy of the look-up depends on the quality of the data provided by the SHOUTcast station broadcaster.

Biggest Black Hole Blast Ever Could Solve Cosmological Mystery

Astronomers have seen a distant galaxy that blasts away material with two trillion times the energy the sun emits ? the biggest such eruption ever seen. That ejection of matter could answer an important question about the universe: why are the black holes in the centers of galaxies so light?

Computer models of the early universe usually produce a virtual cosmos that looks like ours except for one thing. The ratio of the mass of black holes in galaxy centers to the rest of the matter in galaxies is larger in the simulations than in the real universe.

Scientists think somehow galaxies are ridding themselves of much of the mass that would have ended up falling into their central black holes. However, until now researchers have been at a lack for an explanation of how this might happen.

To expel matter from galaxies takes energy. "We needed some input of energy from supermassive black holes," Nahum Arav, an astrophysicist at Virginia Tech told SPACE.com.

Supermassive black holes are obvious candidates, because they are the most energetic objects known. Some galaxies containing active black holes, called quasars, shine more brightly than anything else in the universe. "Our simulations showed that if we allowed the quasar to release a lot of mechanical energy, then the masses of galaxies would match observations," Arav said.

Arav led a team that observed a quasar, called SDSS J1106+1939, which dates back to when the universe was only 3 billion years old (it is now about 13.7 billion years of age). Most quasars are millions or even billions of light-years distant, which means we see them as they were long ago. As such, they offer a unique window back in time, to when galaxies were young.

The researchers used an instrument called a spectrometer, which spreads light out into its constituent wavelengths, attached to the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. This instrument revealed a giant cloud of hot, ionized gas that was blasted away from the galaxy at nearly 5,000 miles per second (8,000 kilometers per second), or about 2.6 percent the speed of light. The gas is mostly hydrogen with some helium and traces of other elements such as carbon. [Most Powerful Black Hole Quasar Discovered (Video)]

The energy needed to fire that blast is five times greater than any other quasar has displayed to date.

The sheer size of this ejection demonstrates a way for young galaxies to off-load mass: The energy in a quasar we usually see as radiation can be turned into kinetic energy, or energy of motion. This eruption is throwing up some 400 times the mass of the sun every year, and such events last for anywhere from 10 million to 100 million years.

That, Arav said, could be the key to why galaxies are generally less massive than they should be, and why the black holes at their centers are the sizes that they are. "It gives the theorists something to work with," he said.

Arav said the exact mechanism for these mass ejections still isn't clear, and his own observations don't yet point to what it might be. Future work might enable astronomers and cosmologists to build hypotheses.

Saavik Ford, an associate professor of astronomy at Bronx Manhattan Community College and research associate at the American Museum of Natural History, said that if this phenomenon proves to be common, then it could also help answer a lot of other questions. One is why there some clusters of galaxies are embedded in gas radiating X-rays, which would require some source of energy. The finding could also help astronomers understand why star formation in some massive elliptical galaxies seems to stop when it does.

But the discovery isn't a clear-cut smoking gun. Arav said he wants to do more observations and see if he and his colleagues can't find more quasars like this one. If not, or if such outflows are more rare, then there is some other phenomenon at work. "I hope in two years to have a nice sample of about 10," he said.

The new observations will appear in a paper led by Benoit Borguet of Virginia Tech, to be published in an upcoming issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

(AP Photo/Christophe Ena)

(AP) ? France announced Tuesday that it plans to vote in favor of recognizing a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly this week.

With the announcement, France becomes the first major European country to come out in favor, dealing a setback to Israel. The timing of the announcement appears aimed at swaying other European nations.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told parliament that France has long supported Palestinian ambitions for statehood and "will respond 'Yes'" when the issue comes up for a vote "out of a concern for coherency."

The Palestinians say the assembly is likely to vote Thursday on a resolution raising their status at the U.N. from an observer to a nonmember observer state, a move they believe is an important step toward a two-state solution with Israel. A Palestinian state would still not be a full General Assembly member, however.

Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly and the resolution is virtually certain of approval. But such a vote by France ? a permanent council member ? could weigh on decisions in other European capitals.

Europe is divided over the issue. Switzerland and Portugal have said they will vote for the measure, but Germany is among the countries that have opposed the bid. Britain's position remains unclear.

Palestinians say they are doing this out of frustration over the four-year deadlock in peace efforts. They believe an endorsement of their state will bolster their negotiating position.

Israel strongly opposes the bid, accusing the Palestinians of trying to bypass negotiations. The resolution would endorse a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel opposes a pullback to the 1967 lines.

As French lawmakers applauded Tuesday? many of them members or allies of the Socialist-led government ? Fabius cautioned against raising Palestinian hopes too high.

"But, but, but, but, but ? but at the same time, madame and monsieur lawmakers, we must show in this case a lot of lucidity," he said.

"On the one hand, because the text is currently being discussed, and I myself had (Palestinian) President Mahmoud Abbas on the phone yesterday morning," he said. "On the other hand, because ? let's not hide from this ? that this question will be asked at a very delicate moment."

He went on to note the "fragile cease-fire" after the recent deadly fighting between Hamas and Israel, the Israeli election in January, and the upcoming "change in composition of the American administration" ? with the United States seen by many as perhaps the most pivotal player in the region.

"In any case, it's only through negotiations ? that we ask for without conditions and immediately between the two sides ? that we will be able to reach the realization of a Palestinian state," Fabius said.

Real Estate and Branding? What is in the name? | Richard Silver's ...

In late July or early August I migrate to Northern California for a few days of Inman Connect in San Francisco. It is a great conference that is an opportunity for REALTORS, Brokers, Franchisors and Franchisees to come and hear from the latest ?mouse trap? movers and shakers about what the next five years may bring to the world of Real Estate.

One of the best sessions led by Kelly Mitchell of Hawaii fame turned into an open and honest discussion about branding?for some attendees the first question was whether the topic of branding was and should be agent driven, broker driven or franchise driven.

Years ago, when I began my career?a REALTOR chose a brand that fit their vision and worked within the brand?.and if things did not work out or their marketplace changed, they moved to another brand that was more suited to the what they wanted for their future.

Now, as I look around in our large market that not only has competing franchises, but competing brokers within the franchises, competing agents within the competing brokers, within the competing franchises, I am really becoming confused?.and if I am confused, what is the consumer feeling?

What I don?t get is why would I choose to move to a ?brand? and then spend time, money and energy re-designing the brand? Is it because the brands are not moving fast enough to accommodate their agents? Is it because as independent contractors we all feel that we are the brand first and foremost and we are looking for that competitive edge?

BUT?here is the biggest question: Is branding just the logo design and colours or is it the quality and professionalism of the agents within the Company? ?Does everyone reflect the vision of the owners? ?Are owners aware of how they are being represented in the marketplace by their salespeople? If the salesperson?s income level is high, does the owner care they are not, or is profit the primary motivator?

I have?watched talented agents over the years leave their Brands to establish new companies that expressed their vision of the Real Estate profession. In a lot of these cases the new Boutiques brands are diluted by mini offices that take new directions? Will the everyday race to pay the bills mean the erosion of the Boutique visionaries as reality sinks in?.

So what does the future hold for the existing, the new and the Brands to come? Will they evolve quickly enough for the consumer and the REALTORS? Will they learn to be ahead of the curve and can they be profitable in the long term if they are enticing agents with high splits and the latest in technological mouse traps. Will Brands truly reflect the owner?s vision or are we, as REALTORS, our own worst enemies?

Factbox: Key elements of the Greek debt deal with the euro zone and IMF

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund agreed on steps late on Monday to reduce Greece's public debt and help the country regain market access next decade.

Below are the main elements of the agreement.

- Greece will reach a primary surplus target of 4.55 percent of gross domestic product only in 2016, rather than 2014, to give the economy a better chance to start growing again.

- Greece will organize a debt buy-back of its bonds held by private investors. The buy-back will take place by Dec 12.

No amount or price was announced, except that the price offered is to be no higher than the closing prices for Greek debt on Nov 23. A source familiar with the ministers' discussions said the price under consideration was around 35 cents a euro.

- once the buy-back yields a positive outcome, the IMF will join the program and the euro zone will consider the following:

- a cut by 100 basis points in the interest rate on bilateral loans to Greece under the first bailout, reducing the rate to 50 basis points above financing costs or Euribor. Ireland and Portugal do not have to cut the interest because they themselves receive aid.

- the euro zone's temporary bailout fund, the EFSF, will cut its fees charged on loans to Greece by 10 basis points.

- maturities of loans to Greece, both bilateral and from the EFSF, will be extended by 15 years.

- Greece will not have to pay interest on loans received from the EFSF for 10 years.

- Profits from the European Central Bank's Greek bond portfolio, acquired during the bank's Securities Market Programme (SMP) will be handed over to Greece for debt servicing from the budget year 2013 onwards. No amount was given in the statement of the Eurogroup, but a euro zone source said this amounted to 11 billion euros.

- euro zone countries will consider further measures and assistance, including a further interest rate reduction on bilateral loans to Greece to help Athens reach debt sustainability when Greece reaches a primary surplus and meets all the conditions in the reform program.

- Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio is to fall to 175 percent in 2016, to 124 percent in 2020 and substantially below 110 percent in 2022.

- Euro zone countries will continue to finance Greece until it regains market access, if Greece sticks to the agreed reform program.

- Greece will get a tranche of aid of 34.4 billion euros in December, of which 10.6 billion will be for budget financing and 23.8 billion for the recapitalization of banks. A further 9.3 billion euros will be disbursed to Greece in three sub-tranches in the first quarter of 2013 if Athens meets reform milestones set by the lenders.

A formal decision on the disbursement of the money will be taken on Dec 13, if national procedures in euro zone countries are completed and following the review of the results of the debt buy-back operation.

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

November 22nd, 2012 by admin

There are already a significant number of pet loss grief counselors in the United States. They have been certified to offer mental health and emotional support in a unique field. However, those with certification should be aware of the requirements to get recertified. Certification typically lasts three years. To be eligible to renew pet loss grief certification, the medical doctor, nurse or minister must have been actively practicing. In other words, it may be desirable to reapply several months before current certifications are due to lapse. The counselor must have been in practice for about 500 hours or more during the last two or three years. He or she should also have had 50 hours of continuing education. The standards for pet loss grief continuing education are somewhat tolerant and can include seminars and college courses. Publications in academic journals may meet up to half of the 50 hour requirement.

Syrian rebels capture air base near Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels captured a helicopter base just outside Damascus Sunday in what an activist called a "blow to the morale of the regime" near President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

The takeover claim showed how rebels are advancing in the area of the capital, though they are badly outgunned, making inroads where Assad's power was once unchallenged. Rebels have also been able to fire mortar rounds into Damascus recently.

The director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said rebels seized control of the Marj al-Sultan base on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday morning. He said at least 15 rebels and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting that started a day earlier. The rebels later withdrew from the base.

Rebels appear to be trying to take over air bases and destroy aircraft in order to prevent the regime from using them in attacks against opposition forces around the country.

The rebels have no protection against the attack helicopters and fighter jets that have been blasting their positions.

Rebels have been attacking air bases in different parts of Syria, mostly in the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo.

In the battle at the base outside Damascus, Abdul-Rahman and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said rebels destroyed two helicopters with rocket propelled grenades and captured a tank. They say the base, which is on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, houses several radar positions.

"This is a blow to the morale of the regime, because it is close to the heart of the capital," said Abdul-Rahman, referring to the base that is about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from Damascus.

Al-Shami said the rebels withdrew from the base after they captured some ammunition. He said they feared counterstrikes by regime aircraft.

An amateur video posted online showed rebels walking next to two destroyed helicopters. At least three other helicopters appeared undamaged. Black smoke billowed in the distance.

Another video showed several radar posts on hills inside the large compound. Parked military trucks stood inside as rebels roamed freely.

The activist videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting about the events depicted. Syria restricts the access of reporters.

The Observatory also reported violence in other parts of Syria, including the country's largest city of Aleppo in the north and the capital itself.

It said rebels on Sunday captured a training base for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command near the Damascus suburb of Douma. The PFLP-GC is one of the Palestinian factions most loyal to Assad.

The PFLP-GC said in a statement late Saturday that the base was under attack. It said that thousands of activists and fighters who fought against Israel were trained at the base over the past 30 years.

Also Sunday, the Observatory said a bomb targeted a bus in the southern village of Othman, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. It said rebels and troops clashed in the southern region of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said residents found 12 bodies in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, scene of heavy clashes between rebels and government troops over the past few days.

State TV said troops clashed with al-Qaida militants in Daraya, killing some of them and confiscating a mortar that they were using in their attacks.

The station said that troops killed an al-Qaida affiliated Palestinian militant known as Abu Suhaib in the Damascus suburb of Hajira. It said his group was behind several bombings in Syria that killed and wounded dozens of people.

Assad's regime blames the revolt on a foreign conspiracy. It accuses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the United States, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom it calls terrorists.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

ETA calls for talks over "definitive end" with Spain, France

MADRID (Reuters) - Basque separatist group ETA said on Saturday it wanted talks with the Spanish and French governments to negotiate a definitive end to military operations and a handover of its arms.

Basque newspaper Naiz published an advance summary of an ETA statement, which said the group wanted talks over the return of ETA prisoners to the northern Basque region, an end to its military structure, and a full disarmament. The paper said the full statement would be published on Sunday.

ETA said in the statement that successful talks over those three areas "would bring about a definitive end of the armed conflict".

Just over a year ago ETA announced an end to a four-decade armed struggle for independence in which more than 800 people were killed, but did not fully end operations, nor turn over its weapons. ETA has broken ceasefires in the past.

Spain's Interior Ministry could not be immediately reached for comment on Saturday.

The government has repeatedly said it would not negotiate with ETA, and has called on the group to disarm and disband.

ETA said in the statement that it would listen to proposals from both the Spanish and French governments over an end to the conflict.

The group has lost support in the Basque Country and been crippled by numerous arrests and discoveries of arms caches in recent years, mostly in Spain and France.

Earlier this month British police arrested a suspected ETA member in Liverpool linked to several murders, while its military head was arrested in France in October.

The statement came four days after discussions were held between Basque political parties, labor unions, the Catholic Church, and French Socialists in the northern Spanish city of San Sebastian. After that meeting the groups said an end to ETA was close.

Communication is key to keeping a balance in romantic relationships

?>

Alex Sylvester has been with his boyfriend, Loren, for a year and seven months. When they first started dating, they struggled to find and maintain a balance between independence and dependence. Everyone requires different amounts of personal space, and understanding a partners personal needs is critical.

From getting comfortable with a higher education curriculum to making and breaking relationships on a consistent basis, life on a university campus is a learning experience by default. Students interact with other students both familiar and unfamiliar, relationships are made, and friendships either blossom or wither.

Moreover, intimate relationships are explored and pursued. Whats overlooked is the importance of these relationships to the college experience and the personal growth of each partner.

Let?s face it ? relationships are hard work. There is no doubt that they are an essential aspect of human life; however, they require more energy and communication than people are often willing to give. Relationships are especially susceptible to turmoil at the university age range.

When it comes to romantic relationships, it?s important that partners maintain an appropriate balance of dependence and independence.

?One of the biggest developmental issues among college-aged students is trying to create a sense of independence from their parents but also trying to find who you are in relation to other people,? said? Jonathan Davies, a psychologist and former counselor for the University of Oregon.

That sense of freedom carries over into every aspect of a students new life in college. Maintaining the appropriate balance between personal independence and interpersonal dependence is an important factor in this new lifestyle.

?I do not require as much (alone time) as Loren, but that?s something he?s taught me to appreciate, taking time to go be alone or be with other friends,? said Sylvester, the Gender and Sexual Diversity Advocate for the ASUO.

Over the course of his relationship, Sylvester realized that ?communication is the answer to most relationship problems.

?If you hang out too much together all the time you can get sick of each other, so we talk about it a lot more, and there is a lot more communication,? Sylvester said. ?We have to make sure that we are both getting our needs met, whether that is a need to be together or a need to be apart.?

In terms of intimate relationships, it?s important to be ?aware of your needs for connection and for your needs to be independent,? Davies said. ?It?s about understanding and accepting where someone is emotionally at a given time.?

An important part of a healthy relationship is moderating the balance of freedom that each partner needs. Recognizing that you have dual needs for both freedom and attachment is extremely pertinent for all age ranges, but especially for the university-aged demographic.

College is an important time for experimenting and seeking out the niche that students are best suited to associate with. Relationships, intimate or otherwise, are an essential factor in the academic success of students.

?Our academic learning is built on top of having our social and physical needs met,? Davies said. ?I think the need for social connection is as strong and as necessary as the need for air and water.?

?If you?re going to get serious with someone, I think it?s important to maintain your own life while still being connected with the other person?s life simultaneously,? Ali Noell said. ?I think my boyfriend and I do that really well.?

Noell?s boyfriend Brent graduated two years before Ali in 2009. Ali graduated this past spring with a degree in education.

?So all of his friends moved away (after Brent graduated), and we decided to live together,? Noell said. ?So that was a big commitment for both of us to make. It could have worked out poorly, but luckily we both still very much love each other.?

After Noell and her boyfriend had both graduated, they made the decision to stay in Eugene. Noell explained that becoming dependent on another person in terms of livelihood and romantic?necessity?is a difficult decision to make.

?I think it?s really important to be yourself,? Noell said. ?I have a lot of friends who think that they really like somebody, but they?re really trying to be somebody else for that person, and that?s not ever going to work out in the long run.?

Noell explained that it is critically important to have a partner that respects who you are and doesn?t expect you to be someone that you?re not. This comes back to maintaining your individuality as well as your independence.

The real issue is maintaining that personal liberty without losing sight of the intimate relationship that is so important to students. ?A healthy romantic relationship should have room for both (dependence and independence), and if it doesn?t then that?s something to think about,? Davies said.

He explains that there is a danger in either of the extremes: being too independent or being overly connected and dependent that one loses his or her individuality. The solution according to Davies: communication.

Dependency does not necessarily have to carry a negative connotation. As humans, we naturally seek out relationships with others. However, too much dependence can hinder the development of healthy relationships. It?s counterintuitive because if you love someone you want him or her all the time, but often times becoming too dependent on that person?s presence can begin to erode that person?s sense of freedom.

Davies spoke on the topic, saying that an overdependence on a partner can lead to an abusive relationship. This isn?t to say this is true of all cases; however, it is definitely a prevalent issue. Partners need a sense of independence or else that partner can lose touch with their support group and personal interests. According to Davies, this is a dangerous phenomenon. Again, he explains that communicating is the best solution to avoiding this kind of behavior.

It?s important to note that understanding one?s own emotional patterns is essential in understanding what one wants out of a relation?ship. ?People need to be aware of their emotional patterns and sometimes those patterns can be extremely healthy,? Davies said. ?But sometimes we?re also attracted to negative characteristics.?

However, it?s not always negative qualities in a partner that create hardships or conflicts within a relationship. The UO brings together students from all different geographical regions, both nationally and internationally. This brings on a new set of challenges for students and their romantic relationships. Oftentimes, relationships break apart geographically because the summer months separate some couples. Also, study abroad programs leave students with their intimate partner thousands of miles away in a foreign country with new friends, new experiences and minimal communication.

?Loren and I have spent two summers apart, and he tours the nation with a drum and bugle corps, so he can?t talk very much. I get to talk to him for five minutes a day during the summer for pretty much the entire two months,? Sylvester said. ?That is really hard, and we have a lot of systems in place to make sure that I don?t get controlling and angry and that he doesn?t feel like he?s constantly disappointing me because he?s unable to talk to me.?

?Both times were really hard. The first summer I was, I don?t like to use the word crazy, but I was crazy,? Sylvester said. ?This summer, the thing that really changed was that we talked about what was going to happen over the summer a lot in advance, and we had been dating longer, so I trusted him. I think that trust and communication was what was missing the first time.?

Managing the intimate ties with your romantic partner is difficult when you?re separated by thousands of miles. Davies said, ?There is no magic solution to that, but I think talking about one?s fears and what?s realistic to pledge is helpful and can provide some clarity.?

?There used to be a saying in the 60s that if you love something set it free. If it?s meant to be, it?ll always be there,? Davies said. ?It?s a paradox ? you have to do the opposite of what your emotions tell you. Instead of squeezing tighter, you just have to let go.?

As humans, we undergo a natural cycle of desires, fears, ambitions, successes and hardships. It?s important to find a balance and this holds true when it comes to romantic relationships. Oftentimes, the balance of independence and dependence on partners goes astray, but that balance can be restored with the combined efforts of both partners.

This is where the communication factor comes into play. If you understand your own emotional position, communicating that to the other partner in the relationship can create a healthy discussion about fears and desires.

Consequently, the relationship will thrive because both partners understand each other?s emotional states, therefore creating a respectful, balanced relationship. Communication is the key to maintaining that balance and helping both partners grow as a couple and as individuals.

'Rise of the Guardians' is a charming holiday tale

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

REVIEW: Kids have complicated mental universes. Why can't all the dogs on the block be related, or each bathroom in the house be a different country? Grasp that, and it's easy to relate to the premise of the 3-D animated children's film "Rise of the Guardians," where Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman and the Tooth Fairy all join together in an Avengers-like group to fight evil.

These are not your father's fairy-tale or holiday characters. Santa Claus (voice of Alec Baldwin) is Russian, the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman)?is Australian, the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) resembles a flying mermaid and the Sandman can't talk. The odd man out is Jack Frost (Chris Pine), who can freeze things with a touch, but can't remember anything about the human life he had before he took on his wintry role.

Jack is called upon to help the group battle a dark and creepy bad-dream-giving Bogeyman called Pitch (spookily voiced by Jude Law), who, with his horrific black nightmare horses, is like something out of Harry Potter's closet of villains.

The group's dynamics are fun and original. Santa's the boss, spouting Russian composer names as swear words. (I'm rooting for "Rimsky-Korsakov!" and "Shoskakovich!" to catch on with grade-school potty mouths.)

His sergeant-at-arms is the not-so-cuddly Easter Bunny, who knows his way around a boomerang more than a basket, and is perhaps the most annoying of the bunch.?

But it's the silent Sandman who turns out to be the hidden star of the show, sweet and tough at the same time, even though he resembles a spun-sugar madeleine cookie.

There's a dark undercurrent running through the film. Jack Frost has a tragic backstory, and until he hooks up with Santa's crew, he's kind of a cold little loner, getting his icy thrills from instigating snowball fights and sledding excursions for which he always has to stay invisible.

He's a natural addition to the Guardians, yet it takes him a while to feel he fits in. Kids relate to that -- who hasn't watched a group of established pals from afar and felt the holes in your own life all the more achingly?

The plot gets a little scrambled, but imaginative kids will walk out of the film with a whole new set of mental imaginings. My preschooler and I found ourselves wondering who else the Guardians hang out with. (Yeti figure prominently, leprechauns are mentioned.) Will there be a sequel where Baby New Year and Father Time play roles?

mzl.melihmoa.320x480-75In the world of social recommendations we've seen the appearance of startup like Amen, CircleMe and Stamped, which was bought by Yahoo. However, one does sometimes wonder whether these products are all still a little, well, geeky? Are they missing out on the mainstream of users? Maybe. We covered the beta launch of LoveThis back in May. However, the app has now come out in it's full blown version on iOS as a place to "save and share recommendations you love".

The holidays: family time, home-cooked meals and shopping ...

Hi again, it?s me, Dana. I am so excited for the holidays this year! I?m looking forward to spending time with my friends and family, eating home-cooked meals and gift giving. It?s the perfect time of year to show my appreciation for all the wonderful people in my life. This year I have a pretty mixed list to buy for: mom and dad, of course; Collette, my roommate; my mixed-doubles partner, Dean; and my niece, Sienna. I?d also like to get creative with some homemade gifts for a few friends and coworkers.

My mom is usually tricky to buy for, but now that she?s on Pinterest all I have to do is check her boards to see the home d?cor, cook books or crafting tools she?s got her eye on. It?s like I have access to her virtual wish list ? love it! My dad is all about the gadgets. He just got the iPhone 5 so I know any accessories would be great. I?ll do a quick search to see what?s out there that he would enjoy.

Collette is by far the easiest to buy for. We live together and like a lot of the same things. I?ll make a trip to Evolution. I love that store and Collette will love something from there too. Also, the fall dress I got there would transition to winter if I had the right blazer or scarf ? why shouldn?t I give myself a little holiday cheer too!

Since signing up for their email loyalty program earlier in the fall, I?ve been getting great offers from ShoeSparkle. Just this week they emailed suggesting I surprise the man in my life with new shoes. I didn?t even realize they sold men?s shoes! It?s perfect though, because Dean?s been talking about these neon tennis shoes he wants. While I wouldn?t normally buy a guy shoes, I know he?ll love them ? plus, their return policy is superb if he doesn?t.

So that leaves little Sienna. I don?t normally shop for toys, so this one might be tricky. I?ll probably do some online searching for gift ideas. There?s got to be toy gift guides out there to help me know what?s popular for the kiddies. While I?m at it I?ll search for homemade gift ideas too. I?m sure to find something fairly easy and super cute.

I?m planning to do most of my shopping this weekend to take advantage of all the great Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Most likely I?ll do the majority of my buying online ? it?ll be cozier shopping from my couch. It sure seems like shopping this year will be a lot less stressful than years past!

Happy Thanksgiving and happy shopping!

XOXO,

Dana

Note from the editor: Holiday shopping really is getting easier for customers because savvy marketers are more customer obsessed than ever.

Dana is resourceful, using technology to save time and money this holiday ? and she?s not alone. Rather than roaming from store to store, a quick online search for gift ideas can point her in the right direction for what she?s looking for. In order to reach people like Dana as they search for ideas, marketers need to make sure they have content on their site to attract people looking for recommendations. Here?s a quick look at search terms that include the word ?gift.? ?Unique Christmas gifts? and ?homemade Christmas gifts? top the list.

Search Terms containing a variation of the word gift
Source: Experian Hitwise

Homemade gifts ? something Dana is looking for ideas about ? appeared in several variations. If we look at what sites are receiving traffic from homemade gift terms, we see that Pinterest is number five on the list, with an increase of search clicks from the same time last year.

Homemade gifts aren?t the only thing on Pinterest. Similar to Dana searching her mom?s board for gift ideas, many consumers are actually creating ?holiday wish list? boards specifically so friends and family know what they want or need. Adding ?pin it? buttons to your emails and website can help get products on those boards and in front of buyers. With the varied ways people use Pinterest, marketers are seeing the value ? a recent EMS survey revealed that 71% of marketers are investing in Pinterest this holiday.

Like ShoeSparkle, many marketers are also touting their gift guides via email. One trend is highlighting specific categories, like ?for her,? ?for him? or ?for the home.? This is a great way to remind recipients of the different people they need to buy gifts for during the holiday season. In addition, remarketing emails could also be sent based on what categories were clicked by recipients. Experian Marketing Services recommends testing this method when sending gift guides ? in general, more targeted emails perform better.

Whiz kid from Sierra Leon built own battery, radio transmitter

1 hr.

Kelvin Doe?s neighborhood in Sierra Leone has power lines, but they seldom deliver electricity. So, the 16-year-old whiz kid built his own battery out of acid, soda, and metal parts scavenged from trash bins that he now uses to light up area homes and help him work on his own inventions.

Among other gadgets to his credit are a homemade radio transmitter, plus a generator to power it, that he uses to run his own community radio station under the handle DJ Focus.?

?People normally call me DJ Focus in my community because I believe if you focus you can do invention perfectly,? he said in a video about the whiz kid produced by @radical.media for the THNKR YouTube channel.

Doe?s engineering prowess was noticed by David Monina Sengeh, a graduate student MIT Media Lab, during a summer innovation camp called Innovate Salone that he runs in Sierra Leone. Sengeh arranged for Doe to visit the top-flight engineering school this fall.

?It?s an opportunity for him to create the future that he wants to live in,? Sengeh said in the video. Check it out below to learn more about Doe?s inspirational story and his inventions.?

Tips to Painting a Room | HomeSpot HQ Blog

Adding a new color to the walls will brighten up any room and give it a new look.? Painting just the walls in an average sized room say 10 feet by 12 feet can easily be painted in a half day by one person or in less time if you have an extra set of hands to help. Painting is an excellent beginner DIY home improvement task to tackle. ? The key to a successful painting project is to plan out your painting project ahead of time for it? to go more smoothly.

Plan

Finding your paint color can be a challenge as their are so many to chose from.? To help give you some ideas, look online, visit your local paint store, review magazines, ask a friend or neighbor.? Be sure the color you pick? will match well with other elements in your room, such as the linens, if this is bedroom, the window drapes, flooring, and other furnishings.? Often it helps to bring a few paint swatches home ahead of time to see what would look the best on your walls.? Your paint store can help you painting tips for a roomdetermine how much paint you will need to purchase based upon the size of the room.? Before heading to the paint store, measure the length, width, and height of each wall.? Along with the paint you will also need several other item before you start.? They include:? something to cover the floor (tarp, old bed sheets, plastic), spackle, putty knife, sanding block, small flat head scree driver, paint can lid opener, paint brushes, masking tape, roller handles, roller covers, and a roller pan.

Prep

A great paint job begins with great prep work.? First remove everything off the walls and move furnishings into another room.? If things are too large to completely move out of the room then move them off the walls and into the center of the room.? Next lay down plastic or tarps to cover the entire floor and any items you moved to the center of the room.? Remove electrical outlet cover and switch plates.? Fill-in any holes in the walls with the spackle and sand off to make smooth.? If you live in a house built prior to 1978, there maybe a lead paint hazard, so you will not want to sand any painted surfaces.? You may also want to wipe down the surface of walls to remove dust and cobwebs.? Applying masking tape to the surfaces that you want to avoid painting such as the trim baseboards and?ceilings?is the next step.? Applying a primer coat first sometimes is a good idea, especially if you are trying to cover up a red colored wall.

Painting

After the walls are prepped, it is time to paint.? Be sure the paint is well mixed before applying.? Using a brush to ?cut in? all around the edges and within interior corners to start.? These are places that the roller can?t reach.? Then using the roller to roll out the wall field.? Being careful to remove extra paint on the roller to avoid drips.? After the paint dries you may want to add a second coat for a deeper color.? Remember, if you end up disliking the color that goes on the walls, you can always wait until it drys and paint over it!

Other Great Apes May Have Midlife Crises

60-Second Science

Zookeeper ratings of the moods of 500 chimps and orangutans revealed that our closest relatives also show a U-shaped curve of life satisfaction. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

Feeling listless? Unfulfilled? Like your life?s half over and what have you got to show for it? Well, you?re not alone. In fact, you might not even be human. Because a new study shows that even apes can experience a mid-life crisis. The work appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Alexander Weiss et al, Evidence for a midlife crisis in great apes consistent with the U-shape in human well-being]

Social scientists, economists, and philosophers have long been aware that some people are subject to a sort of half-time slump: a period when their well-being dips to an all-time low. What?s less clear is what causes this midlife ennui, which by many measures falls between a joyous childhood and contented retirement? Is it socioeconomic? Psychological? Metaphysical?

In this study, researchers first checked to see if the slump is uniquely human. They asked zookeepers to rate the relative happiness of some 500 chimps and orangutans, based on how often the apes seem to be in a good mood or how much pleasure they derive from socializing. Turns out our closest relatives also show a U-shaped curve of life satisfaction?cheery in youth and old age, and mopey in the middle.

So when you start lusting after that red convertible, you?re not totally bananas. You?re just going ape.

?Karen Hopkin

New car to help cancer patients

A local organization unveiled a vehicle that will help it provide a much-needed service to cancer patients on island.

Guam Cancer Care revealed its Patient Transport Program vehicle at the Guam Auto Dealers Association Auto Expo on Saturday at the Agana Shopping Center.

Through donations from Cars Plus, IP&E and Bank of Guam, Guam Cancer Care was able to get the car. The vehicle will help it continue its work bridging the gaps in health services and work toward the launch of its Patient Transport Program for local cancer patients.

Currently, Guam Cancer Care administers critical direct support services programs for Guam's cancer patients, by helping them navigate the medical system, get financial assistance, even get cancer screening.

The Patient Transport Program will allow Guam Cancer Care to enhance its services by providing patient transportation to and from medical appointments.

"We are extremely grateful to our Patient Transportation Service sponsors, Cars Plus, IP&E and Bank of Guam, for supporting Guam Cancer Care and providing us with these resources to expand existing services for our local cancer patients. We look forward to fully launching our Patient Transport Program in December 2012," said Guam Cancer Care's Executive Director Terry Cuabo.

"We are extremely excited to be able to provide this much needed transportation service," Cuabo said.

Cuabo said cancer patients who need help getting to their appointments will be able to use the service. Cuabo said it's important patients don't miss treatment -- which sometimes happens due to lack of transportation. Missing treatments could mean the difference between beating the cancer and allowing the cancer to grow.

Guam Cancer Care has assisted more than 310 Guam residents afflicted by cancer during its last year in operation.

Guam Cancer Care also has given financial assistance awards to 144 eligible cancer patients, totaling approximately $184,480. The money helps cover the costs of much-needed cancer treatment for patients who are currently on active treatment.

A big part of the organization's goal is to promote early detection of cancer. Guam Cancer Care representatives said residents can help by getting screened and encouraging others to get screened as well.

?Baby Mama? Actor To Document His Journey From Hollywood To ...

?

"This Is Dante" will premiere later this year

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 18, 2012 - Bronx, NY native Andrew Hillmedo Jr. p/k/a Dante Hillmedo is an American actor who?s appeared in a handful of movies, most notably 2008?s major motion picture Baby Mama starring Saturday Night Live alumni Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and is now trying his hand at a career in rap ? with little success.

Hillmedo will document his misadventures in a documentary called ?This Is Dante?, which he is co-producing independently with leading digital label Block Starz Music and Yacht Club Management.

?This Is Dante? will highlight the fledgling actor-turned-rapper?s ascent ? or lack thereof ? in the music industry in a series of funny webisodes to air at www.ThisIsDante.com beginning later this winter.

Hillmedo says the series will detail his career false starts, including an ill-fated collaboration with distant cousin Slick Rick, and missed opportunities, like a nervous audition that lost him a role in the Biggie Smalls biopic Notorious, through a mix of behind-the-scenes footage and funny reenactments.

You can view the intro for the upcoming web series here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR2JPOD5RTo

Hillmedo, whose background is Jamaican, started acting in elementary school as part of the glee club and carried on into junior high, where he was in the drama club before leaving due to time constraints.

?I revisited acting [later] in high school, but ended up getting scammed outta $800 by a company that vanished as quick as we got there, which put acting on hold again,? explains Andrew who appeared in IIya Chaiken?s award-winning Liberty Kid in 2007 and played a drug dealer in the Biography Channel television series, Watching the Detectives, in 2008. ?My first year of college I did a lot of research and took matters into my own hand. I went out and took some acting classes then got myself cast as an extra or background in movies and commercials. That led to getting named roles in features.?

Around the time of Baby Mama, Hillmedo was attending New York?s School of Visual Arts, where he majored in Computer Animation ? before being ?kicked out? because he couldn?t afford the tuition.

As the recording artist Dante Hillmedo, whose first name comes from Andrew?s character in Baby Mama, the talented, young New Yorker may be taking on his most ambitious role to date.

Here you can listen to Tina Fey & Amy Poehler talk about one of Dante's deleted scenes from the movie "Baby Mama" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heUqgG4ddyk
